Oceanos Sinking

The ill fated ship was sunk on the eastern coast of South Africa. Reportedly, the ship was on its way to the Wild Coast of the Transkei then suddenly an explosion occurred in the engine room that created a big hole there. The sea water started entering into the ship. The report of this incident was brought to the captain Yiannis Avranas who was such a cruel man that he ordered all his crew members to leave the ship without informing passengers about that. Crew followed the directions of their captain and left the ship with him without ringing the emergency alarm.

The poor passengers only came to know when some of them saw lower deck filled with sea water. They told other passengers about that. Some other revealed that they had not seen any of the crew members for hours and they thought they had been left the ship leaving them for dying.

Ship entertainers Julian Butler, Moss and Tracy Hills were the only one to come forward and help the passengers. Because they were linked to the ship for a long time, they knew what to do in difficult hours. They called to South African Navy and Air Force and told them about the location of the ship and asked for a quick rescue operation. A very quick response was given by forces and 16 helicopters were immediately sent to airlift the remaining passengers. The efforts of emergency rescue proved fruitful for 571 passengers and they saved their lives. The rescue operation lasted for seven hours.

A documentary movie is to go on air tonight at NBC about ship where the survivors will describe what was happened on that day with them.
